Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in Maiden Speech
In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his term.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
